GRA Hosts 6th Annual Taxpayer Awards Night

By Mariama Dem

The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) held its 6th Annual Taxpayer Awards Night on Saturday, 2nd March, 2024 at The Kairaba Beach Hotel in Senegambia. The event was attended by President Adama Barrow, government ministers, officials and members of the business community.

The awards ceremony recognises institutions and businesses that comply with tax regulations and pay taxes on time.

In his opening speech, GRA Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe highlighted the importance of honouring taxpayers, noting their contribution enables investment in public services, infrastructure and development programmes benefiting Gambian citizens.

“This ceremony celebrates taxpayers who consistently file tax returns on time, pay taxes promptly, present authentic customs documents, and comply with revenue laws,” Mr Darboe said. “We are witnessing various infrastructure projects currently ongoing in the country, most directly funded by tax revenue.”

Record Revenue Collection

According to Mr Darboe, in the 2023 financial year GRA collected D15.794 billion, exceeding the target of D581.7 million. He attributed this to the GRA team’s hard work, stakeholder support including from the Finance Minister and President Barrow, and innovation reforms such as digitising tax collection systems.

GRA is also working on further reforms including the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAX) to streamline domestic tax collection and facilitate e-filing and e-payment.

President Barrow commended taxpayers for their role in the nation’s progress and development.
