Gambia expected to stop importing rice by 2026

President Adama Barrow in Basse said the Gambia will stop importing rice in the next five years as his administration has put up an 80 million Dollars project that is currently being implemented to eliminate the rice crisis in the country.

Speaking in Basse during a meeting, the Gambian leader asserted that his government will eradicate rice importation in the next five years, highlighting that the country has all the means to make it a reality.

President Barrow noted that his administration is concerned about the agricultural status of the country as out of 100% only 15 % of rice is cultivated in the Gambia and this his government want to halt.

The 80 million Dollars worth project Barrow says, is meant to implement an agricultural food value chain that will address the rice dilemma.

To stop the youth of the country from using the dangerous Mediterranean Sea to Europe for greener pastures, the NPP leader stressed that the project will also create jobs for the young people that will elevate their financial gains and remain in the country.

His government will also industrialized the Gambia for the young people to secure decent employment opportunities he added.

On what he described as strengthening the health sector, President Barrow said his government is currently building 24 hospitals and renovating 26 health facilities across the country. He announced they will also provide 260 doctors from Cuba to address the doctors shortage in the hospitals. This he says will make access to health care easy and affordable for Gambians.

Meanwhile, the president who is optimistic of winning the election in his region, thanked the people of URR for the love and support rendered to him and his party.
