Works Minister Backs Local Contractors

By Modou L. Badjie

The Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure has reiterated the Government of The Gambia’s commitment to bolstering local contractors’ capacity by providing support for their involvement in state projects. This statement was made during his recent inspection visit to road projects in Kombo South.

Historically, many construction projects in the country were awarded to foreign entities. However, there has been a notable shift in recent years, with Gambian contractors increasingly taking on significant roles in the country’s infrastructure development. This trend has seen local companies benefitting from government-financed projects, including schools, healthcare centers, and roads.

Minister Ebrima Sillah emphasised that empowering local construction companies is a key priority for the government. Projects such as the Gunjur Badala Road Beach Road and the Sanyang Village Road, both contracted to Gambian company Zen Construction, demonstrates the increasing involvement of local contractors.
