Scorpions Brace for Derby Clash with Defending Champions

By Omar Jobe

The Scorpions are poised for a captivating showdown in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against neighbours and defending champions, the Teranga Lions of Senegal, setting the stage for an exciting derby that goes beyond the tournament. Head Coach Tom Sainfiet and Captain Omar Colley conveyed the team’s eagerness and willpower during a press conference, underlining their readiness for the do-or-die challenge that lies ahead.

While Senegal stands as Gambia’s only neighbour, adding an extra layer of intensity to the match, the Scorpions, despite their low rank, approach the game undaunted. Coach Saintfeit, acknowledging the team’s readiness, referred to their ability to overcome setbacks, notably a disruption during their arrival in Ivory Coast due to technical issues with the plane. Despite an injury concern for Yankuba Minteh, the Scorpions remain steadfast and prepared.

Captain Colley, with a personal connection to Senegal through his mother, emphasised the team’s commitment to defending their national colours in this gripping derby. As the much-anticipated match unfolds on Monday in Yamoussoukro, the Scorpions aim to make their mark on the AFCON stage.

This match is more than just a football match; it’s a clash of pride and sense of accomplishment. And although, on paper, Senegal is the favorite, football is played on the pitch. And the Scorpions would be eager to silence their noisy neighbours. The question is, will they succeed? We shall find out soon enough.

Kick-off is on Monday at 2 pm Gambian time. Group C also features Cameroon and Guinea, who will compete later in the day.
