President Barrow Unveils Plan to Double Tax Collection

By Haddy Jarju

President Adama Barrow has revealed an initiative to increase tax collection, targeting a substantial rise from 5 billion Dalasis to 10 billion Dalasis in the coming years. The announcement was made during a gathering at Pakau Njogu in the Upper Nuimi North Bank region, where President Barrow emphasized the fundamental role of enhanced tax revenue in fostering sustainable development for the country.

Addressing citizens, President Barrow acknowledged the existing taxes in the country, such as those associated with acquiring a passport or purchasing a home, contributing annually to a 5 billion Dalasi tax collection. However, he highlighted the crucial aspect of international donor support, which currently contributes 3 billion Dalasis but often comes with specific requirements and conditions.

President Barrow shared the challenges associated with the rapid pace of the country’s development, noting that donors recently urged a reduction in the ambitious agenda. He stated, “Just recently, these donors came to me and said your development is going very fast, and you need to reduce it a bit. Relying on someone for help puts you in a position of dependence, and we aim to end that slavery. Hence, we plan to increase tax collection to 10 billion dalasi instead of the current 5 billion dalasi.”

The proposed tax increase, according to President Barrow, is a strategic move to liberate the country from excessive dependence on donor support, allowing for more autonomy in decision-making and development planning. The President called on citizens to contribute actively through taxes, underlining the importance of financial self-reliance for national progress.
