OIC Highway Records 112 Accidents, Prompting Safety Concerns

By Modou L. Badjie

A surge in accidents on the OIC Bertil Herding Highway has raised alarms as records show a concerning 112 incidents, claiming the lives of 16 individuals. The overwhelming figures were disclosed by Lamin King Colley, Commissioner of Traffic of The Gambia Police Force during a press conference at National Road Authority’s office in Bijilo.

Commissioner Colley stressed the need for collective efforts to address the rising toll of car accidents, urging heightened awareness and adherence to road safety measures. The reported accidents on this crucial route have prompted calls for immediate measures to enhance safety and mitigate further tragedies.

Commissioner Colley detailed that his office documented a total of 1,210 car accidents nationwide, with 148 recorded fatalities for the period under review. He highlighted the severity of the issue by comparing the number of deaths from car crashes to other deadly diseases, emphasising the urgent need for intervention.

Despite its relatively small size, The Gambia ranks 8th globally on the road accident index, according to Commissioner Colley. He attributed accidents to factors such as overspeeding, driving under the influence, mechanical failures, and various human behaviours. The Traffic Commissioner noted a positive reduction in head-to-head accidents but stressed the importance of sustained efforts to enhance road safety.

Commissioner Colley concluded by calling on the general public to remain vigilant, adhere to road signs and symbols, and actively contribute to creating a safer road environment.
