Mama Kandeh Demands Action on Critical National Issues Post National Dialogue

By Awa Sanneh

Mama Kandeh, Secretary General and flag bearer of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has voiced his support for President Adama Barrow’s national dialogue initiative. However, in a recent press conference, Kandeh also took the opportunity to address several pressing challenges facing the nation and its citizens.

During the press conference, Kandeh called upon President Barrow to prioritise crucial issues such as corruption, the justice system, fuel prices, the high cost of living, ongoing highway demolitions, voter registration processes, and taxation.

While acknowledging the importance of the recently concluded National Dialogue, Kandeh stressed the importance of making it an ongoing event, providing all citizens with the opportunity to contribute to discussions on national development. He urged President Barrow to ensure that the dialogue remains focused on addressing pressing issues and finding tangible solutions rather than serving as a platform for mere praise.

Of particular concern to Kandeh was the rising cost of living, especially the increased price of goods like rice. He expressed dismay over the sudden price hikes despite no new imports, as he highlighs the challenges faced by families struggling to afford basic necessities.

“What is harder is fighting with someone with an empty stomach. It’s so sad that some live with
their family without being able to feed them due to the high cost of living. There are no new
imports of rice so I don’t understand how all this increment in the price of a bag of rice came up,” he laments.

Additionally, Kandeh expressed disappointment with the current state of the country’s security sector, as he stresses the need to bolster security forces to ensure the safety of all citizens.

Furthermore, Kandeh questioned the imposition of a the D1000 charge on travelers at the Banjul International Airport, urging President Barrow to address this issue promptly.

While affirming support for the National Dialogue, the GDC leader called for swift action to address the pressing issues facing the country and to improve the lives of the ordinary Gambian.
