Janjanbureh natives raised D1.2 million to light up town using solar-powered streetlights

Article by: Modou L. Badjie

The community of Janjanbureh on Saturday brightened up as the solar-powered street lights installed through the instrumentality of the Janjanbureh Development Network were lit. The solar project is expected to improve the quality of life for the islanders.

Meanwhile, as technicians planted light-bulbs on lamp-poles, some residents have already started rejoicing at the prospect of their community being brightened-up.

The Councillor for Janjanbureh Ward, Alhagie Foon, thanked the Janjanbureh Diaspora for conceiving and executing the streetlight project. He noted that the project will make a huge difference in improving the well-being of the community in several ways.

Another Janjanbureh native and resident, Kemo Bamba, said NAWEC was the only source of electricity for the community and that in cases of power outages, the community used to suffer in darkness.

Speaking on behalf of the Janjanbureh women, Ma-Binta Marrong, acknowledged that the streetlight project will give them a sense of security as they hitherto had some safety and security fears when they send their kids at night as the entire area used to be dark.

The project’s implementation was spearheaded by the Chairman and President of the Development Network and the natives of Janjanbureh raised 1.2 million Dalasi whilst their Member of Parliament made a counterpart contribution of D300, 000 for the successful installation of the over 225 streetlights.
