Gambia’s Participation in African Spelling Bee Hangs in the Balance Amid Financial Struggles

By Mariama Dem

The Salimatou Foundation for Education finds itself grappling with a financial quandary as it endeavors to secure Gambia’s representation in this year’s highly esteemed African Spelling Bee competition. In an official press statement obtained by Star, the foundation reveals the uphill battle it faces in garnering support from government institutions, private entities, and philanthropists.

Despite relentless efforts, crucial stakeholders have yet to offer positive feedback, leaving the foundation in a precarious position with the African Spelling Bee just a month away. The financial backing required to send six talented winners from Gambia remains elusive, putting their participation in jeopardy and raising concerns about the potential loss of a significant educational opportunity for the nation.

“We are aware of the challenges that our nation faces, but we firmly believe in the power of community and shared commitment to education. Our dedicated spellers have showcased exceptional skills, and their representation at the African Spelling Bee would not only attest to their hard work but also become a source of national pride,” the foundation emphasized in its statement.

At this critical juncture, the Salimatou Foundation urgently appeals to the generosity of individuals, businesses, and organizations, imploring them to step forward and support their cause. The foundation emphasizes that every contribution, regardless of size, will play a crucial role in overcoming the financial hurdle and ensuring Gambia’s continued participation in the African Spelling Bee.

The African Spelling Bee was founded in 2016 by 10 Spelling Bee organisations from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe and they had the very first African Spelling Bee in the same year in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing together 27 National Champions from each of the countries to participate.
