Concerned citizen writes to Mayor Bensouda about exorbitant house rent due to…

Dear Mr. Mayor,

Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, It is indeed with a heavy heart that I write about this ongoing plight in the Gambia. Your people continue to suffer and being exploited. Housing in the Gambia is so expensive and keeps rising; yet, no one is concerned. Mr. Mayor, I urge you to investigate this matter.

For instance, take a look around and even at some pages on Facebook where apartments are being advertised and see some of the dirty houses priced ridiculously. It is heartbreaking indeed.

As Gambians, it will be a shame if we should neglect issues that deter the development and progress of the people. Agents and landlords are now kings and queens of this great nation because the little salary (biggest issue) earned is being given to them.

We all know that real estate is a continuous profit making business, so why must tenants pay a huge price to have a roof over their heads? Please Mr. Mayor, the government should intervene in our behalf because a stitch in time they say, saves nine. Look into this matter keenly, valuate these apartments and stop these vultures from feeding on us.

People are dying in silence. Some of our main issues in the Gambia are:

  1. Poor salary scale (A big shame): The economy keeps changing whilst salaries remain same. It is not even enough to feed us properly let alone afford a roof over our heads.

2. No price control/regulation

3.Crime rates increasing as a result of the aforementioned. I could go on and on.

We should ask ourselves this, where are we heading to as a nation? Thank you sir in advance for dealing with this plight. I remain a noble citizen of the Gambia.
