Annual Ziyareh Commemorates Legacy of Gambian Islamic Scholar, Sait Matty Bah

By Haddy Jarju

The Tafsir Maba Jahou Bah Foundation recently organised its annual “Ziyareh” in Bakau to honor the revered Gambian Islamic missionary, scholar, and leader, Sait Matty Bah. The event, attended by dignitaries from Senegal, brought together Bah families worldwide to reflect on the profound contributions of their great grandfather, known for his influential Islamic teachings and charismatic leadership.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of the holy Quran and prayers for the departed souls, setting a solemn tone for the occasion. Sait Matty Bah, born in 1854 to Maba Jahou Bah and Matty Njie, played a crucial role in the spread of Islam in Badibou and Saloum between 1880 and 1887.

Senegal’s Ambassador to The Gambia, Bashir Saine, represented the President of Senegal, acknowledging and supporting the Bah families in both countries for their commendable initiative in organizing the annual event. He praised the foundation’s efforts to honour the legacy of Sait Matty Bah, recognizing his role in championing Islam.

Imam Alhagie Ousman Jah, a member of the Shariah Appeal Cardi Court, provided a brief history of Sait Matty Bah, highlighting the importance of the annual “Ziyareh.” He emphasised that celebrating Sait Matty Bah’s commitment to spreading Islam not only unites the Bah families but also strengthens the bonds between The Gambia and Senegal.

Sait Matty Bah’s influence drew attention, leading to a plot by the French to eliminate him in 1887 due to his growing connections with the British. French forces attacked his strongholds in Badibou, forcing him to relocate to Bathurst (Banjul) and later settle in Bakau with the permission of the British governor. In Bakau, he continued his mission by establishing an Islamic school that attracted students from the Senegambia region and beyond. Sait Matty Bah passed away in Bakau on 23 December 1897.
